From the Editor: No Hawaii on Spring Break? No worries

Published: March 27th, 2008 01:38 PM

It’s almost here, Spring Break — the week students and teachers alike have been anxiously awaiting. But, not all students get to soak up the sun in the tropics or have their photo taken with Mickey Mouse. For those otherwise trapped closer to home, here are some ideas to liven up the break without ever having to leave Pierce County.

A Puyallup and Sumner both have an amazingly rich history. The communities were settled more than 100 years ago and if you thumb through the phone book, you’ll come across the last names of many of the pioneer’s descendants. This week’s Lifestyles cover features the five museums in our areas detailing the lives of those who founded these towns. Use this week off to celebrate the community’s heritage by visiting one of these museums — and learn a little more about your hometown in the process.

A This is the last chance to see the 2007 artwork showcased in the rotating Outdoor Art Gallery. On April 5, the old artwork will be removed to make way for the new pieces that have been carefully selected. Grab a map at the Puyallup Main Street Association office, city hall or the Puyallup Public Library and take a self-guided tour. It’s an opportunity to see artwork from all over the country in addition to pieces from local students.

A Perhaps far-off destinations weren’t possible for your Spring Break this year, but your week can still include a little international flair. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 29, guests will be treated to highland dancers, bagpipe bands and Celtic singing at the ninth annual Scottish Heritage Festival. Almost 30 Scottish clans will be represented at the celebration, giving those curious about their ancestry a chance to find out more information.

A Those seeking a little more structure in their Spring Break routine can check out the day camps at the Puyallup Parks and Recreation and the Sumner/Bonney Lake Recreation Department. In Puyallup, youth from 5 to 15, get to go bowling, skating and watch movies. In Sumner and Bonney Lake, it will be a week of sports plus arts and crafts.

A If you want to use your time off to give back to the community, there are a handful of food and clothing banks in the area that are always looking for a helping hand. To sort clothing at Puyallup’s St. Francis House, call Arlene Sambila at 253-848-3618 and to help at FISH Food Bank in Puyallup call 253-840-5458. Those in the Bonney Lake area can call Pastor Stew Bowen at 253-208-6779 to lend a hand at the Bonney Lake Food Bank or at the Bread of Life food bank.
