Editorial: Transparency in Puyallup needs to be a top priority

Published: March 26th, 2008 03:04 PM

Puyallup leaders need to take a long, hard look at how easy it is for the community to access public records. For years, residents have battled and lost in the fight for open records. The Herald has conducted audit after audit, finding that Puyallup is the most reluctant city in East Pierce County when it comes to handing over public records.

And this past weekend in honor of Sunshine Week, The News Tribune reported that Puyallup is the slowest city in the area to respond to any requests. This can’t be what Puyallup wants as its claim to fame. The community deserves a city that is willing to readily and swiftly hand over public information.

There is no excuse for the difficulty people have had in acquiring information. It’s something the city should correct quickly.
