When Puyallup’s best pitcher Adam Cimber takes the mound, the results typically are favorable for the Puyallup Vikings baseball team.

The Vikings got the result they envisioned as Cimber pitched a complete game shutout, fanning 13 hitters in a 3-0 victory on April 16 against Graham-Kapowsin. It was Puyallup’s 14th win of the 2008 season.

“Adam had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning,” Puyallup head coach Marc Wiese said. “He’s had everything going for him the last three games. He threw fastballs, curveballs and had his change up going. He threw a no-hitter on April 9 against Spanaway Lake.”

Cimber, who is a right-handed junior who utilizes a unique submarine sidearm delivery, has proven to be one of the hottest pitchers in the state in his past three starts on the hill.

“In his last 20 innings on the mound, he’s struck out 30 batters and hasn’t walked anybody,” Wiese said. “He’s been playing great for us.”

Cimber wasn’t rattled when his attempt at a no-hitter was derailed in the seventh.

“They finally got a hit up the middle on us. Up until that point they hadn’t even got close to getting a hit,” Wiese said. “Right after it happened, Adam had a smile on his face. That hit didn’t bother him. At that point he knew all he had to do was go out and win the baseball game and he did it for us.”

Puyallup’s offense didn’t get into a groove until Taylor Ausbun drove in two runs in the third inning after doubling to left field. The Vikings added one more run in the sixth giving themselves a 3-0 advantage they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way.

“We’re winning games right now but our offense is struggling. We’re relying on our pitching staff,” Wiese said. “Their pitcher Jake Shadle of Graham-Kapowsin is one of the top pitchers in the league. It was good for us to get a win against them.”

Leading the hitting parade for the Puyallup was Cimber who went 2-for-3 and Ausbun who went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.
