Viking/Ram 15th golf tourney to raise funds for local students

Nearly 130 golfers expected to hit the links at High Cedars Golf Course in Orting for a good cause

The fairways of High Cedars Golf Course in Orting will be packed with a plethora of golfing enthusiasts for the 15th annual Viking/Ram Golf Tournament this Saturday afternoon. Tee off is scheduled for noon and dinner will be served following a spirited round of 18 holes. The cost is $100 per golfer with all proceeds going toward scholarship funds for Puyallup and Rogers High School students heading off to institutes of higher learning. A large contingent of community members are expected to make appearance at one of the most important fundraisers of the year.

The Viking/Ram Golf Tournament has taken place at High Cedars Golf Course in Orting since 2000. Previously, the tournament was played at Lipoma Firs in Puyallup.

In 2007, 120 golfers were in attendance. This year, Puyallup resident Clayton Sparks expects even more golfers to make an appearance. Clayton Sparks is the son of Carl Sparks, who happens to be the individual Sparks Stadium in downtown Puyallup is named after.

“The tournament is a five-person scramble,” Sparks said. “Last year a 120 golfers showed up and this year we expect the same amount and maybe even more.”

Sparks said he enjoys seeing Puyallup and Rogers high school alumni members get together for a good cause.

“There’s no rivalry out here. We’re all working toward the same thing,” Sparks said. “Seeing the alumni from both schools come together is a lot of fun. There’s a lot of old timers out here who reunite with people they haven’t seen in awhile. Some people even come to the tournament just to watch their friends golf. We have individuals of all ages out here. Everyone is out and about having a good time.”

While the majority of the athletes on the course are affiliated with Puyallup and Rogers, the tournament is open to anyone who wants to participate, Sparks said.

Last year, former Mariners third baseman and current announcer Mike Blowers was part of a group that won the tournament.
