Senior night wasn’t too kind to the Sumner Spartans boys soccer team. Auburn Riverside spoiled Sumner’s celebration, defeating the Spartans 1-0 on May 1 at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
Auburn Riverside’s Oscar Diaz scored in the 38th minute after receiving a pass from Dalton Thomas that Diaz headed into the goal.
Sumner had its chances in the second half to tie up the contest. Sumner’s best opportunity came when James Ray booted a free kick from 20 yards out toward the goal with two minutes left in the game. Auburn Riverside goalie Derek Hawn made an aerobatic play reaching the ball at its highest point, deflecting the shot out of harms way for Auburn Riverside.
Sumner head coach Peter Voiles said his team mustered up more opportunities to score goals in the second half than they did in the first.
“We definitely had our chances to score. Especially toward the end of the game. I was pleased with the way we battled,” Voiles said. “This game didn’t effect our seeding for the postseason and our team still gave it everything they had. It was a good effort on senior night. We have 10 seniors this year. That’s a big class.”
The Spartans are the No. 2 seed out of the SPSL 3A Division. The Spartans will compete in a playoff game on May 10. As of press time, Sumner’s opponent hasn’t been determined.
“We have a cross-over game Tuesday (May 6) and I hope we can get back a little bit of momentum in that game,” Voiles said.
Sumner captain James Ray is already eagerly anticipating the playoffs.
“Even though we lost tonight we still have a solid background going into the next few weeks,” Ray said. “I’m looking forward to the playoffs and also am looking forward to hopefully winning as many games as we can.
