Beamer downs Puyallup on senior night at Sparks Stadium

Puyallup Vikings soccer squad loses final regular season game, but still finish in first place in the SPSL

There wasn’t much on the line for the Puyallup Vikings boys soccer team in their final regular season contest against Beamer.

The Vikings already had locked up the league title after defeating Rogers High School 3-0 on April 29. With little to play for, Puyallup suffered a 2-1 defeat against Beamer High School on May 2.

“Beamer desperately wanted to win this game. We had already locked up the No. 1 spot in the league and they were fighting to get into that No. 3 spot so that they wouldn’t have to play a loser-out playoff game,” Puyallup coach Matt White said. “The fourth place team has to play a loser-out game and third place team automatically is in districts. They had a lot to play for and it showed. You got to give them a lot of credit. They played with a sense of urgency and a great amount of energy.”

White said the Vikings didn’t get off to a good start against Beamer.

“We didn’t come out strong or hard at first. It was senior night and there was a lot of distractions,” White said. “Even with that we had our shots to score. We had at least four one-on-one chances but we didn’t convert.”

Beamer made the most of their opportunities to score goals.

Alan Kim scored in the 32nd minute and 50th minute, giving Beamer a two goal lead during the mid-point of the game.

“Kim’s first goal was one of the best shots I’ve ever seen,” White said. “After the game I went up to him and shook his hand telling him how good of a shot that it was.”

Puyallup finally found the back of the net in the closing minutes when forward Justin Veltung scored after receiving a pass from Devin Thomas in the 78th minute. Veltung finished with a team-high 16 goals and recorded 10 assists this season.

The Vikings soccer team will compete in a district playoff game on May 10 against an undetermined opponent as of press time.
