Beamer’s powerful track and field teams swept Puyallup’s boys and girls squads registering a 87-48 victory in boys action and a 102-38 win on the girls side on April 30 at Sparks Stadium.
Puyallup boys track and field head coach Dennis Erlenmeyer wasn’t disappointed with his teams’ performance against a perennial SPSL powerhouse.
“Beamer has lost only one dual meet in three years,” Erlenmeyer said. “This year they are undefeated in league. They are an outstanding track school, they just have a great program. For a young as a school as they are that’s quite impressive.”
Erlenmeyer said the final home meet of the year gives athletes one more chance to achieve times and marks they’ve been striving for since practice began in late February.
“This is the time of year when they start achieving some of those goals they set for themselves early on,” Erlenmeyer said. “Beamer is good and it gives our kids a chance to compete against some of the best.”
Puyallup’s sophomore distance runner Jesse Jorgensen took first place in the 1600 meter-run clocking a time of 4:39.4. Jorgensen also nabbed first place in the 800M.
“I was running to win today,” Jorgensen said. “All year long I’ve wanted to improve as much as I can.”
Even Jorgensen is surprised about how proficiently he’s performed despite being a sophomore.
“I really didn’t think I would be this good,” Jorgensen said. “It’s a surprise and I’m enjoying every bit of it.”
Erlenmeyer said Jorgensen is one of the most talented athletes on the entire team.
“He broke the sophomore record in the 800 meters this year,” Erlenmeyer said. “He’s a great kid and a great runner. At the Shelton Invitational (prestigious track meet) a few weeks ago he was named athlete of the meet. That is a big time accomplishment.”
Puyallup distance runner Rob Webster Jr. made a triumphant return to the track after suffering knee tendentious which had sidelined him until he was able to compete against Beamer on April 30. Webster responded to the challenge, picking up a first place finish in the 3200 meter-run with a time of 10:06.1.
Webster’s father, Rob Webster Sr., was glad his son was able to make a return to the track for the final regular season home meet.
“I know he’s delighted to be back,” his father said. “He’s running at the University of Washington in cross country and track next year. He’s pretty thrilled he has a chance to compete at a home meet.”
Fellow distance runner Alyssa Merrill earned first place in the 3200M registering a time of 12:09.
Puyallup junior IV Reeves took home three first place finishes in the 100 meter dash, long jump and triple jump. Brennan Boyes captured first in the high jump as well.
