Beyond the athlete: Cougars last line of defense

Published: March 27th, 2008 12:26 PM

Cascade Christian senior Derrick Clifford embraces his home away from home between the goal posts. Clifford, who is the senior goalie for the Cougars soccer team, has played the sport since he was 8 years old. For those past 10 years he’s been the anchor of every squad’s defense that he was on.

“I love competition,” Clifford said. “It’s an intense game but it’s still fun at the same time.”

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Clifford, asking him a few questions about his life away from the soccer field.

Shaun Scott: What is your favorite movie of all time?

Derrick Clifford: “It would have to be Goodfellas. I like the director Martin Scorsese. It’s just a great movie. The main character gets away in the end. It’s pretty awesome.”

SS: Where is your favorite place to dine in Washington?

DC: “I’m going with Naan-N-Curry in Renton. I go there about once a month. It is a great Indian food spot and is pretty cheap, which I like.”

SS: Where do you see yourself in five years?

DC: “Hopefully graduated from college. I’m going to go to California for college. I haven’t decided exactly where I’m going to go yet but I recently was accepted at Azusa Pacific University. I’m going to take a visit down there soon. I want to go to film school and I’m hoping to major in cinema or broadcasting.”

SS: What is the best advice you’ve ever received and from whom?

DC: “Look in the book, son.” “It was from my PE teacher Bobby Young a few years ago.”

SS: Outside of soccer, what are some of your favorite hobbies?

DC: “Definitely recreational sports. I love snow boarding, wake boarding, slack lining and tubing. I like to keep as active as I can. One of things I love to do is eat and I don’t want to get fat. Doing those types of things doesn’t allow me to get fat, plus it’s fun to be outside all the time.”

SS: Who is one of your biggest idols?

DC: “Jesse Lacy. He’s the lead singer in a band titled, “Brand New.” It would be cool to go on tour with him and his band and just chill.”

SS: If you could pick one person, who would you go to dinner with?

DC: Chuck Palahniuk. He’s an amazing author who’s body of work speaks for itself. He’s just kind of out there. I think it would be great to have a conversation with someone like him. It would be interesting.”
